SCHH ARC “This & That” — November 5, 2024

Thursday’s Membership Meeting – Don’t Miss This One!

RTTY Program Will Precede Chapter Election and Vote on Revised By-Laws

Our ARC’s meeting on Thursday, November 7th, will be held at the Lakehouse. At 7 PM, those in attendance will see a presentation on RTTY provided by one of the ham radio community’s leading experts, Ed Muns, W0YK. Ed will be joining us via Zoom from his home QTH in Los Gatos, California!

Ed Muns, W0YK, is recognized as an expert in RTTY by the ham radio community.

If you’ve ever wondered how to get up and running on RTTY, this may be your chance to get started.

Our last General Membership Meeting of 2024 will follow Ed’s presentation. Included on the agenda will be our Election of 2025 Officers and a vote to approve our recently updated ARC By-Laws. Updates on our Emergency Preparedness initiatives and the plans for a 10m SSB Net will also be on the agenda.

We will not formally meet again after this meeting until 2025…so, please plan to join your fellow ARC members on Thursday night at the Lakehouse.

Hope to see you there!

How Is This for DX?? Voyager 1 Checks In From Deep Space

15 billion miles away, an old workhouse finds a way to send information back to the Earth!

If you total up the distances that your station’s signals have traveled since you have been operating, would it exceed the distance of this recently reactivated communication from way out of this world? Check this out. 15 billion miles is a long way!!!

Humor

Lon Seward, WB4KSG, provided this photo from the 1970s when he may have thought about operating as a maritime mobile.

Note the two antennas on the passenger side of the hood! Keener eyes may be able to make out the vanity license plate!

We’re not sure what Lon was running inside the station wagon or if he, as a CW person, had the famous strapped key for mobile operations.

Ed Stratton, W1ZZ, said that this could not be considered a maritime mobile because the tires were sitting on terra firma.

Bob McCormick, KD8IH, pointed out that if the car were moving while operating and if it hydroplaned, that it might qualify as an M/M.

Thanks to all for the good humor!

Any other comments? Please send them to Harve, KB3FW (hnat463@gmail.com).

SCHH ARC Nets – It’ll Be Darker Outside When the Nets Start!

During the summer, our weekly nets are at times preceded by beautiful sunsets. There are remnants of that tapestry on display as the nets are “called” for many weeks as our home planet’s Northern Hemisphere gets Sol’s rays well into the evening.

Not so now! The clocks fell back last weekend and now we are moving more and more into the “light deprivation” part of the year.

Thanks to all who checked into our nets last week.!

Weekly SCHH ARC Nets

Sunday’s Net (8 PM) operates on 147.550 MHz simplex on the last two Sundays of the calendar month. The Sunday net will be on the KE4HAM repeater (147.135 + with a tone of 91.5 on both the input and the output) on all other Sundays of the calendar month. Check-in can be done even if you don’t have a radio up and running via EchoLink by using the link KE4HAM-L when the net is on SIMPLEX and KE4HAM-R when the net is on the SCHH Okatie Repeater.

Wednesday‘s Net (8 PM) operates through the KK4ONF/Jasper repeater, 147.060+. The net can be accessed via EchoLink using the link KE4HAM-R.

Net Control Stations and EchoLink Coordinator

Very special thanks to Bob Officer, WA6WAY, for the many years that he was the control of our Sunday evening net. Bob has decided to pass the baton to Frank Pollino, K2OS, who will call the nets on a regular basis on Sundays.

Thanks to our regular Net Controls: Frank Pollino, K2OS; and Harve Hnatiuk, KB3FW.

Thanks to Ron Frick, AI4HH, for working diligently to keep EchoLink up and running for our nets.

These are our nets. Please enjoy them. They are very special and give us the opportunity to connect with each other on a regular basis while testing our equipment’s connectivity capabilities.

Please keep our nets alive and well by checking in when you can.

Net Control Schedule:

— Wednesday, November 5 @ 8 PM ET: Frank Pollino, K2OS (JASPER COUNTY REPEATER)

— Sunday, November 10 @ 8 PM ET Frank Pollino, K2OS (KE4HAM OKATIE REPEATER)
